There are currently more than 30 swimmers of all ages who attend our session. All swimmers are offered assistance in the water by one of our many volunteers.
What will you do at Puffins?
The main aim of Puffins is to offer a safe and fun environment for people with physical or learning difficulties to be able to swim.
As a new member, you will be asked about your swimming experience – can you float on your own in the water, can you swim out of your depth, what would you like to learn etc? Swimmers will then be introduced to a helper who will swim with you on a one-to-one basis to help you improve your technique, confidence and encourage you to progress in a relaxed environment.
Puffins volunteers can provide support in the water and help you use swimming aids to give you more freedom and confidence in the water. If you have a carer or a family member with you, they are more than welcome to swim with you too.
*Once we have received this we will need you to obtain your doctor’s signature before being able to to get into the pool.
Safety first
The most important thing before you get in the pool is your safety. At Pimlico Puffins, there is always a lifeguard on duty keeping an eye on you. Volunteers are Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checked and are provided with training to help you get the most out of your swimming. We have access to two pools: a shallow warm training pool, with step access, and the main 25 metre pool with a hoist (if you need it) to help you get in and out of the water. A range of floats and swimming aids are available if you need them.
