Meet our swimmers

Mike

How long have you swum with Puffins?

Ten years.

How has Puffins helped you?

It helps to keep my muscles moving as much as possible and keep me fit and healthy. It is also a great way to meet new people.

What do you enjoy about the club?

Its friendliness and enthusiasm of the helpers.

How has the club changed over the years?

It hasn’t changed that much – its still full of nice helpers and swimmers.

How did you hear about Puffins?

Through my local Disabled and Able-bodied social club called Phab.

Anything else?

I think it would be great to get more swimmers involved so that they can benefit from the club in the same ways that it’s helped me.

“I’ve gained many friends”

How long have you been a member of Puffins?

On and off since January 2011.

How did you hear about Puffins?

My physio asked me that I wanted my next challenge to be and I said I wanted to get back into swimming so she recommended Puffins.

What do you get out of Puffins?

I love the people and have gained many new friends since joining the club. My swimming is getting better and better and I feel stronger than ever since my last operation, which has given me such a sense of satisfaction.

What is your greatest achievement?

I can now swim 28 lengths in one session! I’m also using goggles now and gaining the confidence to put my head under water – one of the volunteers has just taught me how to do a push and glide which will help me do even more lengths.

Keith

How long have you been a member of Puffins?

25 years

How did you hear about Puffins?

I injured my back and my doctor recommended I go swimming and put me in touch with Puffins.

How has Puffins helped you?

What do you like about Puffins?

It’s certainly helped my back and given me a regular form of exercise. It’s made me a lot more confident in the water.

I enjoy the social side of the club such as the organised events – I just wish there were more.

How has the club changed in the time you’ve been a member?

It’s changed dramatically – the club used to be made up of men and women in their 40s and 50s – now it’s a lot more varied with many more young people.
